Mega Gastro Health Camp Promotes Early Detection of Digestive and Liver Diseases
August 31, 2026
Desun Hospital, Siliguri, focuses on preventive healthcare, specialist consultation and discounted investigations
Siliguri, 29th August 2026: Desun Hospital, Siliguri, organized a specialized Gastroenterology Medical Camp, aimed at raising awareness about gastrointestinal and liver diseases, encouraging preventive healthcare and promoting timely diagnosis and treatment. The camp brought attention to several common
digestive and liver-related conditions that often remain undiagnosed or are overlooked until symptoms become more severe.
The camp focused on conditions, including
fatty liver disease, chronic liver disease, hepatitis, acidity & GERD, peptic ulcer disease, gallstone disease, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, and other gastrointestinal disorders. The initiative also emphasized the importance of appropriate investigations and specialist consultation for people experiencing persistent or recurrent digestive symptoms.
A special emphasis was placed on fatty liver disease, which is getting more prevalent and can remain silent for a prolonged period. The doctors highlighted that without appropriate evaluation and management, progressive liver disease could lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and other serious complications. Participants were encouraged to understand their risk factors and adopt healthier dietary and lifestyle practices to protect long-term liver health.
The camp also addressed common concerns such as acidity, heartburn, indigestion and bloating. Desun’s Specialists emphasized that while occasional symptoms could be associated with dietary habits, persistent or recurrent symptoms should not simply be managed with over-the-counter medication, without appropriate evaluation. Warning symptoms such as persistent heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, recurrent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding and anaemia could indicate an underlying serious condition and may require further assessment by a gastroenterologist.
The importance of upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy was also highlighted during the camp. Doctors explained that in appropriately selected patients, these procedures could help identify conditions such as ulcers, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal bleeding and gastrointestinal cancers at an earlier stage, allowing timely medical intervention.
Dr. S. K. Sharwan, Medical Superintendent and Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Desun Hospital, Siliguri, said, “Many liver and gastrointestinal diseases remain silent in their early stages. By the time symptoms become prominent, significant disease may already have developed. Through this camp, our aim was to promote awareness, identify risk factors early and encourage people to seek appropriate medical evaluation rather than waiting for complications to develop.”
He also stressed on the importance of preventive healthcare and early evaluation, particularly through healthy dietary habits, maintaining an appropriate body weight, regular physical activity, avoiding harmful alcohol consumption and appropriate screening of individuals at risk of liver and gastrointestinal diseases.
Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Desun Hospital, Siliguri, said, “Persistent abdominal pain, difficulty in swallowing, recurrent vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained anaemia, unexplained weight loss or a persistent change in bowel habits should not be ignored. In appropriately selected patients, upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy can provide valuable information and help in the early diagnosis of potentially serious gastrointestinal conditions, including cancers.”
“The objective of this camp was not only to address existing digestive and liver problems but also to improve awareness about prevention and early diagnosis. People should understand their risk factors, adopt healthier food habits and seek medical advice when warning symptoms occur,” Dr. Kumar added.
The Mega Gastro Camp offered specialist gastroenterologist consultation, assessment of fatty liver and chronic liver disease, evaluation of persistent digestive symptoms, liver disease and hepatitis risk assessment, dietary and lifestyle counselling, laboratory investigations, imaging and liver assessment when indicated, and advice regarding upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy.
The initiative encouraged individuals with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, fatty liver detected on ultrasound, abnormal liver function tests, hepatitis-related risk factors, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained anaemia, unexplained weight loss, altered bowel habits or a family history of
gastrointestinal disease to seek timely medical advice. The consultants emphasized that early detection, healthier food habits and timely treatment could play an important role in protecting digestive and liver health and reducing the risk of serious complications.
