What is Colposcopy?

Colposcopy is the procedure to closely examine the cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of disease.

Why the Colposcopy procedure is done?

Doctor may recommend a Colposcopy if your pap smears test or pelvic exam reveal abnormalities such as:

Cervical cancer
Genital warts
Inflammation of the cervix
Precancerous changes in the tissue of cervix
Vaginal cancer
Vulvar cancer

What you can expect during the Colposcopy procedure?

You will lie on your back on a table with your feet in supports, just as during a pelvic exam or Pap smear.

Doctor will place a metal speculum in your vagina. The speculum holds open the walls of the vagina so that doctor can see your cervix. Then the doctor will position the special magnifying instrument, known as a colposcope, a few inches away from the vulva. A bright light is shown into the vagina, and doctor will look through the lens.

Then the vagina and cervix will be swabbed with cotton to clear away any mucus. Next the doctor may apply a solution to area which may cause some burning sensation. This solution helps to highlight any areas of suspicious cells.

What to expect after the Colposcopy procedure?

After the colposcopy procedure you may not have any restrictions on your daily activities. But you may experience some spotting or very light bleeding from your vagina in the next day or two.
